Need ideas for flowers for a SOUTH-facing windowbox that has some shade.They either wilt yellow or don't bloom

I'm from midwest (Ohio) and I've tried so many things to no avail. I even tried Impatiens, which likes alot of shade! Maybe I'm over-watering (?) but seems like every time I checked box for water is was bone dry. Any suggestions would be much appreciated...

~ Do you have holes drilled in the bottom of the box for drainage? If not then it really sounds like soggy roots. One way to prevent this is instead of planting the plants right into the box, keep the plants in 6" pots lined up in the box and fill in the spaces with moss or mulch. This allows the plants to drain and not get transplant shock.


The other way if you don't want to drill holes in the bottom is to take out the dirt and add at least 2" of Styrofoam peanuts (not the biodegradable kind) or gravel to the bottom so that the water drains out of the soil and the roots won't get too soggy.





As for plants, Try a combination of Wave Petunias (Walmart and has them) which do well in partial shade and keep blooming all season long. They also will drape over the sides. Then add some light pink geraniums and a few marigolds for contrast. Some Miracle grow as they recommend will help as well.
Reply:geraniums are pretty good, if you are planting in a box it will dry out quickly, so water away. Impatience can be difficult to grow sometimes. Begonia are also pretty hardy and keep on blooming.
