Weed with small yellow flowers?

I assume this is a weed, because it grows fast, and quickly gets taller than the grass. If you try to uproot it by pulling it, the stem will break. I think this is a very common weed, but I don't know anything about weeds, and just want to know what it is. Each grows at a random place in the yard, and they tend to not be close to each other. It has small yellow flowers, which seem to bloom constantly.

Reply:Sounds like buttercups which come in many varieties including the tall ones or it is Field Cress. Does it smell spicy and the stems are juicy when broke it's prb Cress and it is actually a very edible green if you cut them while they are small before they flower. Buttercups are hard to break the stems and are poisonous to cattle. If you see them growing in a pasture you will notice the cows won't eat them.

The first weed that comes to mind is of course the Dandelion. Its stems grow taller than the grass, and it has yellow flowers. This plant was brought over from Europe and was used as salad greens. It is high in Vitamin-C, however, don't eat it now, since the today's suburban gardens and lawns have been oversprayed with poisons. The German name for Dandelion is "Loewenzahn" or lion's tooth because of its jagged leaves. Perhaps this will help identify the plant.

Burclover "Medicago polymorpha"


Pea family; summer annual. Seed leaves oblong; first true leaf rounded with single leaflet; later leaves with characteristic clover-like shape and usually have reddish-tinged midveins. Small, bright-yellow flowers form in clusters at the end.

Reply:If it is truly not a dandelion, it could be yellow hawkweed. It is a little early for hawkweed but you can check a picture and see if it fits.

Reply:hey, I'm in KY and a little east from you and we get the same flowers.... stupid little allergy provoking flowers is what they are, and the only way to make them go away is to feed them to a goat (or you could use a weed killer)





i think the one you are describing is a plant is "Hairy galinsoga" it is covered in tiny white hairs and has a yellow daisy like flower





you can order a "field guide" for weeds of Kentucky through UK's college of agriculture, and it'll help you out with the control... but i have lived in this state for 10 years now and i tried for 6 of them to control the weeds before i just bought a damned goat, so now i only deal with the ugly weeds in my yard and not on the acreage.... and by dealing with the ugly weeds in the yard i mean i run them over with the lawn mower or spray them with round-up

Reply:It's a dandelion, they grow fast and tall but die off shortly after the heat hits. This little bugger infiltrates every ones front yards around here and it's kind of nice to see yellow flowers every where but they are weeds and after the flower dies, your looking at ugly old stemmy and bushy weeds.
Reply:My guess is creeping buttercup. Grows very fast, is extremely hard to get rid of. They even sell a herbicide specifically for it. The reason it's randomly all over is because it has rhizomes that grow under the soil. If you break off any of the root, it makes a new plant. I battle them constantly.

Reply:Does it get quite tall, and bushy? It could be wild mustard. The city plants it around here(NM) to bind the dirt during windy conditions. And of course the seed has blown everywhere but they have a small yellow flower
