Should I remove the male flowers from my cucumber plants and how do I know which is which?

I have two burpless cucumber plants they have yellow flowers close to the stem at the bottom of the plant and what look like mini cucumbers with flowers on the end that havent flowered yet. I have been told I have to remove the male flowers or the fruit will be bitter but which is which as if I remove the wrong one there will be no cucumbers. Please help!

The male flowers have no mini cucumbers and carry pollen, the female flowers have mini cucumbers and no pollen.





If you allow the fruit to be fertilised and produce seeds, they tend to be bitter. On the other hand, in several places I have seen it said that the flowers have to be fertilised, or they will drop off!





Have you ever bought a cucumber that doesn't have soft white seeds in the middle? I think they do need fertilising and that, perhaps, older varieties of cucumber did tend to become bitter.





If you leave all the flowers on, you will certainly get cucumbers!
Reply:The male flowers are the ones WITHOUT the mini cucumbers under the flowers.
Reply:If you are really good at removing the male flowers you will get no cucumbers. They are an essential part of the equation, have nothing to do with bitterness which can be avoided by growing the right varieties. You must be thinking about something else where you do want to remove the male flowers and prevent pollination :-)
Reply:I wouldn't worry too much about removing the male flowers to prevent bitter cukes. That sort of problem is usually caused by the plant not getting enough water while the fruit is growing.





As long as you keep the plant well watered, this shouldn't be an issue. They need about an inch of water a week, possibly more if you're living in a very warm place.

Reply:The female are the ones with the mini cucumber and they will only turn into cucumbers once they are pollinated. Bees usually do this by collecting pollen from the male flower and then going to the female flower. You can also pollinate it by using your finger or a Q-tip if you don't have alot of honey bees around. If you remove the male flowers, you will never have any cucumbers.

Reply:the male flowers are on the end of stems with no swelling (fruit). with cucumbers, courgettes and marrows you would normally remove the male flower, if you dont you will still get the fruit but it may taste bitter.
Reply:Female plants generally have one larger reproductive body, known as a pistol, in the middle of them, which should be smooth and more or less free of pollen.





Male plants, on the other hand, should have multiple stamens, which are smaller than the pistol and are covered on the ends with a pretty solid coat of pollen.

Reply:As I recall, my grandpa's peanuts were okay.... they were like a ground running stalk, mostly right beneath a layer of dirt, we pulled them up in a bunch.... i think.
Reply:I don't think they will grow in UK,anyway from what I hear most people are allergic to them............
Reply:I would never have even thought of growing peanuts, thanks for that! You could try putting them under low tunnel cloches. I'm going to search the net for more info.

Is it alright to use Red, yellow, orange and brown as colors for fall based wedding thx.?

I was thinking Ivory for a wedding the wedding dress.


I was thinking Chocolate brown bridemaid's dresses with red (cherry red or Apple red) accents.

I'm thinking the flowers would be Alstroemeria, roses, lilies, orchids.

Those are traditional fall colors so it is perfectly acceptable to use them if you wish. It's your wedding so you decide what the decor and colors will be.
Reply:it sounds beautiful and i agree with the gold accents!! i love the idea because it is different....i got married last june and the 3 main colors were red, white, and black...but had hot pink, orange, and yellow accents....congrats. seems like you are on the right road!!
Reply:I am going with dark brown, burnt orange, and deep red for my colors for my sept. 20th wedding this year. I never thought of using yellow, but I think it will be very pretty.

choosing loops

I found a yellow mass in my garden. It looks like vanilla pudding.?

I was planting flowers and this yellow glob was about 4" down in the dirt, it was about 6" long, and 4" thick. It resembles vanilla pudding only thicker. There was nothing over or under it but dirt. It had no smell. Did I come across some kind of egg sack, fungus or what!!!

It is called "mother" - the root mass for fungal growth of some sort. The mushrooms or other fungus that appear above it are the "fruit" of this mass, rather than the item itself. I would wrap it in plastic and put it in the trash - yuck.


OR - if you are near a river, there is a chance - if this is very wet stuff, that you just opened a turtle's egg burial. Snapping turtles will climb up a long ways from the water's edge and sometimes do bury their eggs. sometimes in yards or gardens. But normally you would have seen some disturbance of the soil over it beforehand, since they work their shells down into the soil in order to lay the eggs, then bury them afterwards.

I have a plant that is growing would like to know if it is a shrub? It looks like my shrubs & has yellow buds?

I planted seeds last fall from my shrubs and these came up. They look like beginner shrubs but they have a yellow bloom at the end of each stem. the leaves are pointed needles like on my shrubs but my shrubs dont flower. I am stumped and think this might be some other type of flower and it just resembles shrubs.

This question has gone a week without an answer. Chances are that it is what you think it is, expecially since you planted the seeds. Without a picture, it is impossible for anyone to give you a definitive anwer. You may want to post a photo to the web and provide a link and resubmit your question.
